Los grupos que enarbolan discursos de odio se han estado armando y organizando en secreto durante muchos años y algunos sin duda estarían preparados para seguir lo que perciben como las órdenes de su líder de culto en el caso de su destitución.
Estamos en un momento delicado y el horizonte es difícil de ver. Para sobrevivir como una nación sana, necesitamos expresar nuestro mejor ser cívico. No ganamos nada atacándonos unos a otros. Debemos rechazar las voces que nos impulsan a la ira y la venganza.
Objetivamente, no hay causa para un conflicto civil. El desacuerdo sobre temas fundamentales (como si necesitamos o no un seguro de salud nacional, cómo queremos manejar la política migratoria e incluso cómo regulamos las armas) no implica un asunto de "guerra civil". Pero los ánimos están al rojo vivo y la "realidad objetiva" se ve diferente dependiendo de a quién se le pregunte.
Las elecciones nacionales serán en 13 meses, el 3 de noviembre de 2020, un momento no demasiado próximo. Ya sea que Trump sea expulsado de su cargo o no, las elecciones darán al país la oportunidad de un restablecimiento democrático y de una renovada afirmación del estado de derecho y del comportamiento civil de nuestros líderes nacionales.

Life After Trump
The evidence of Trump’s wrong-doing in the Ukraine affair has become so overwhelming that many are speaking out including the editorial board of the St Louis Post Dispatch -- in the heart of the mid-west: “Trump is exhausting the nation's and his party's patience. Time to dump him.”
They join powerful East Coast editorial boards in calling on the President’s resign for the good of the nation -- suggesting that the path of resignation gives Trump a negotiated exit that could shield his family and wealth in exchange for a peaceful departure.
But Trump meanwhile threatens charges of treason (a death penalty offense) against Adam Shiff, the California Democrat who heads the House Intelligence Committee and the official impeachment investigation that began last week.
Even more alarmingly, Trump tweets that “If the Democrats are successful in removing the President from office (which they will never be), it will cause a Civil War like fracture in this Nation from which our Country will never heal.”
Is the United States in the midst of its most profound institutional crisis in modern times?
Yes and the House of Representatives, by conducting impeachment proceedings is finally moving, tectonically into direct institutional conflict with the executive branch. We are in a political tinderbox that could ignite at any moment.
Is civil conflict inevitable?
No, but the situation is alarming and could easily get worse. Hate groups have been arming and organizing in secret for many years and some would no doubt be prepared to follow what they perceive to be their cult leader’s orders in the case of his removal from office.
We are at a delicate moment and the horizon is hard to see. To survive as a healthy nation we need to be our civic best selves. There is nothing to be gained by attacking each other. We must reject the voices that spur us to anger and revenge.
Objectively there is no cause for civil conflict. Disagreement over things like whether we need national health insurance, how we want to handle immigration policy, and even the question of how we regulate guns are not “civil war” matters. But tempers are red hot and “objective reality” looks different depending on who you ask.
Next year’s national elections arrive in 13 months, on November 3 and not a moment too soon. Whether Trump is driven from office or not, next years elections give the country a chance for a democratic reset, a renewed assertion of the rule of law and civil behavior from our national leaders.
